The 2011 NOWT season kicked off with a bang with a new record being set for highest total weight for the Mattagami First Nations event on the Mattagami River. The tournament was delayed by 3 hrs on Saturday due to a thunderstorm but was extended an extra 2 hrs at the end of the day. Robinson & Bernath were able to land big fish on both days that put them on top for the $10,000 first place prize and also setting a new record for total weight over the two days. Rounding out the top 5 were Guenette/Morin, Nephin/Arnott, Cayen/Vrolyk and Dion/Dion.
Once again Mattagami First Nations did not disappoint with there well run event. Fishing was great with some big fish being caught on both days. Next year they are planning to go to the weigh in water system to shorten the wait times for anglers to weigh in their daily catches. This new system will also decrease stress on the fish and insure a viable system for years to come. 129 teams competed in this event which really demonstrates the support they have for this event and the Northern Ontario Walleye Trail.  Next up on the NOWT schedule is Dubreuilville on June 18th & 19th. If you haven’t signed up yet do so right away. Lots of big fish on this system and a very well run event by the community.
This was our first Derby on Mattagami Lake. We had a great time and look forward to attending next year. Well run and lots of fun. Thanks NOWT.

Excellent work by Mattagami First Nations on kicking off the 2011 NOWT season.
Way to go Terry and Jamie. I was away for the past few years, since then this event sure became bigger and better. Keep promoting this great circuit. Thank you Mattagami First Nation for the great event.
Yup the Mattagami Rec. Commitee keeps improving this great event.

Right on Cornel!
The thing that makes the NOWT a success is the people. The anglers and the organizers.
Good to see some old faces and a nice mix of new ones too!
Anglers : Please follow Cornels lead and make sure to take a second to thank the people who spend the day on shore so we can do this.
