2022 Mattagami First Nation Fall Classic Walleye Tournament, the final event of the year hosted a battle on 2 fronts – first prize for the final NOWT tournament of 2022, AND the award for the 2022 NOWT Angler of the Year.
Nighty two teams made up of 184 anglers were greeted Saturday morning with overcast skies with winds blowing in from the south. Although the conditions were equal for all, some anglers fared better than others!
On day 1, the team of Luc Portelance and Kyle Chmielewski managed to weigh in an impressive bag of fish at 20.92 lbs. Hot on their tails with only a difference of 1.84 lbs. was the team of Sylvain Bernard and Felix Bernard.
Rounding out the top 3 on day one were the teams of Sylvain Bernard and Felix Bernard at 19.08 lbs. and Steve Gravel and Kevin Robineau at 17.12 lbs.
After a night of steady rain and a north wind, anglers woke up to an overcast and cool Sunday morning. The change in weather could make things challenging for the top anglers to maintain their lead, and for those close behind to narrow and surpass the gap.
But, in the end consistency is what paid off for the overall rankings. By the end of the day, some teams rose to the occasion while others struggled, hoping to remain in contention for a cash prize with the success from Day 1.
Leading the field on day 2 was the team of Luc Portelance and Kyle Chmielewski with a catch weighing in at 10.56 lbs. This was enough to keep the lead they established on Day 1 and earning them the top prize for the weekend.
Despite their heavy bag from day one, the conditions proved to be challenging for the team of Sylvain Bernard and Felix Bernard. Their 3.62 lbs. weigh in dropped them from second place down to a respectable 8th place finish.
The team of Steve Gravel and Kevin Robineau weighed in a smaller bag at 11.41 lbs. on Sunday, but that managed the team to jump one spot and capture second place overall. With this finish, they also manage to capture the Angler of the Year award. Way to go gentlemen!
Third place went to the team of Jason Doyon and Rob Laframboise. Their day 1 weight of 10.86 lbs. combined with their 15.43 lbs. on day 2 saw them jump from 17th to 3rd place.
A big congrats goes to Luc Portelance and Kyle Chmielewski on their win at the 2022 Mattagami First Nation Fall Classic Walleye Tournament.
