The 2018 NOWT forges ahead with the completion of the second event of the season at the Dubreuilville Magpie Walleye Derby. The loaded field of 125 teams battled it out on the Magpie River aiming for the top payout positions as well as garnering points to keep in the top 25 for the 2019 NOWT Championship Tournament in Geraldton next year.
Saturday saw the team of Matt Guacci and Denis Perrier lead the pack with a heavy bag of 19.42 pounds. Even with such an impressive weight, the team of Joel and Jennfer Bernard weighed in a close 17.32 pounds to take second place. Rounding out the third spot was the team of Shane and Tylar Turcotte with 15.82 pounds. With 17 teams weighing in double digits, the Magpie River did not disappoint with quality fish caught and released during the day.
Sunday would tell the ending to this story. Sunday proved to be tough for the Bernards – their Day 2 weight of 3.63 pounds would keep them in the top 10. The Turcottes kept on the leading team by weighing in another hefty bag of walleyes – 11.72 pounds. But, it wasn’t enough. With their commanding lead, the team of Guacci and Perrier added 13.89 pounds for a total of 33.31 pounds for the weekend, a commanding 5.77 pounds over second place to win the DMWD!
