Jamie Robinson was able to get a second place finish at the Sagamok Fall Walleye Classic with the help of his partner Terry Bernath to secure the coveted Angler of the Year prize with 445 points. Terry Bernath also finished with 445 points but the tiebreaker rule was used and Robinson has a better finish in Geraldton. Rounding out the Top 5 was Cory Nephin with 444, Denis Martin with 436 and John-Paul Laflamme with 436.
This was an exciting year for the Angler of the Year because it came down to the final tournament for the outcome. Also, point totals were much higher then years past which is attributed to more anglers doing more tournaments. No repeat winners on the trail this year which shows the competition is getting stronger all the time. Next year should be more exciting as many teams have expressed interest in doing at least 3 tournaments to qualify for Angler of the Year.
Next year will see a new points system and the NOWT is exploring the possibility of a fee to participate in the Angler of the Year competition with all funds being distributed to the top 5 or 10 finishing anglers. This will increase the winnings and the amount of anglers that will participate. Please submit comments on ideas to improve this aspect.
