Many questions have been asked about the new Tournament in Sault Ste Marie on the St Marys River system. I thought I would take the time to answer some of those questions.
- Fish limit for each day? – this system boasts many big walleyes and the rules for this tournament will be a 15 inch minimum with no maximum. This means each day a team can weigh 5 of their biggest fish over 15 inches. There will be some big bags at this event.
- How many lines can each angler have? -each angler will be aloud 2 lines each in both Canadian and American waters.
- How do I get an american license? – because this tournament will be in US and Canadian waters, each angler will require and american fishing license. Use this link to purchase your license online. http://www.mdnr-elicense.com
- Are the waters marked? – these waters are better marked then any other water system on the NOWT. Many buoys mark the system. Nothing to worry about when it comes to your motor’s bottom end. You can also use a Navionics chip to navigate your way around this system. Boundaries and areas of concern will be voiced at the rules meeting on the Friday night
- How is it fished? – this system has many ways to fish it. You can fish the contours of the main channel jigging or bottom bouncing. You can fish back lakes or bays pulling cranks, spinners & etc on planer boards or long lining. Minnows, leeches and worms all work in this system. This system works like any other system. Follow what you know about walleyes.
- Are there really walleyes in this system? – this is a question I get aske alot. Yes there are big walleyes in this system. The AIM, MWT and MWC all hold tournaments on this body of water. I wouldn’t be surprised to see 20+ lbs weighed in on any given day. It is quite possible the winning weight could exceed 50 lbs. All depends on the weather
- How big is the system? – the system is big(40 miles) but it divides around a couple of big islands and heads south. Many great areas to fish. Water temperature is warmer further south if that is any indication.
- What does the Sault offer? – casino, museums, great dining, lots of kids activities, great shopping centres, US border options, many great places to stay, etc. Population – 75,000
- How are fished weighed? weigh in water system on the main stage downtown Sault Ste Marie. Many people will be present to watch the weigh ins of our anglers. This will be exciting for the community. The event will be televised and we do have a band and dinner taking place Saturday night. Should be a great time for all
I hope this answers some questions regarding the event. It is not a scary place. IT is really easy to navigate and you will need to use your electronics and walleye knowhow to get hooked up.
